Welcome

Welcome to the website for the Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research, a new, refereed, multidisciplinary, online undergraduate journal that will advance knowledge in new scholarly arenas by presenting intellectual and reflective work by undergraduates.

The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research adds to the increasing number of scholarly journals that invite undergraduates to pursue their own intellectual projects. We seek undergraduate contributions to the burgeoning academic conversation on service learning and community-based research.

The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is open to undergraduate students in the U.S. and across the globe in all subject areas.  All submissions will undergo a rigorous review process.

Announcing New Editor

It is with great pleasure we announce that Jill K. Burk is the new editor of Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research. Jill is an Instructor of Communication Arts & Sciences program at Penn State Berks. Currently, she is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies at Duquesne University with an expected graduation date of May 2014.  Ms. Burk's research focuses on applied communication interests including constructive approaches to public life and civic engagement, communication pedagogy, service-learning, and ethical communicative practices in integrated marketing communication.

Jill is an active participant in PSU Berks' Center for Service-Learning and Community-Based Research. In addition, she serves on the editorial board of the Undergraduate Journal of Service-Learning & Community-Based Research and participated in its founding. Before entering academia, she worked in marketing and public relations. Jill teaches courses in rhetorical theory, organizational communication, communication ethics, community and civic engagement, and public speaking.

Note to Faculty

We strongly encourage faculty to exercise professional judgment about the quality of work they encourage students to submit to the journal. We strongly discourage faculty from requiring students to submit papers for course credit. We have limited reviewing resources since we are a volunteer editorial staff of faculty and students. We ask that faculty carefully mentor students so that only papers of sufficient quality that have a chance of publication are submitted. If we realize that we're receiving submissions required for course credit, we will de-prioritize reading those submissions, which would mean that even the best of them might not be considered for the journal.

Thank you for your cooperation.
