Ms. JoAnne B. Pumariega is an Instructor in Mathematics and Spanish and a member of the Science Division faculty at Penn State Berks. Her major area of expertise is mathematics education and support for undergraduates who are not mathematics majors.  She moved to the area from northeast Tennessee, where she served in the Department of Mathematics of East Tennessee State University (ETSU) for seven years, teaching mostly Probability and Statistics. She has over forty years of teaching experience at most levels of education in the areas of Mathematics and Spanish. She has been certified in several states, having taught in Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Texas. Her research collaborations and publications combine her experience in Mathematics and Spanish along with psychological/social topics. Her main area of research interest is that of "Math Anxiety" in non-mathematic majors.  Ms. Pumariega has also been increasingly involved in the development and implementation of on-line Mathematics courses (both hybrid and fully on-line) at PSU-Berks, including lecturing and faculty development in this area. She has also been very active in campus activities and initiatives around diversity, culture, and inclusion. These have included serving as the founding faculty sponsor and co-advisor of the PSU-Berks Latino Unity Club (2009-2014), member (2007-present) and Chair (2012-present) of the Science Division Diversity Committee, and organization and participation in numerous diversity-related activities on the PSU-Berks campus and the Berks community. Over the years, Ms. Pumariega has served as President of two faculty women's organizations( at ETSU and the University of South Carolina), along with a two year term as Chairperson of the Board of Education at a private school in Texas, and has been involved in numerous community volunteer and charitable activities. She has received honors related to her dedication and enthusiasm for teaching and mentorship of undergraduate students, including the ETSU "Above and Beyond" Teaching Award (May 2002) and the 2013 PSU-Berks Freshman Advocate Award.
