Lecture examines facility layout problems related to production cycles

Dr. Kulturel-Konak head shot for lecture in examining facilty layout problems related to production cycles

Cyclic facility layout problems will be the subject of the first lecture of the fall Penn State Berks Engineering, Business, and Computing Research Interest Group Speaker Series. Dr. Sadan Kulturel-Konak, Professor of Management Information Systems and the coordinator of Engineering Entrepreneurship at Penn State Berks Berks, will present her research on cyclic facility layout problems on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 1:00-2:15 pm in room 244 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

Cyclic Facility Layout Problem (CFLP) is a special case of Dynamic Facility Layout Problem (DFLP) where there are several production periods and the production cycle repeats itself by going to the first period after the last period because of the seasonal nature of product types and demands, as well as departmental area requirements. In Kulturel-Konak’s research, a mixed integer programming formulation is introduced for the CFLP. In the DFLP literature, department shapes are assumed to be given or fixed. However, this assumption does not hold in the CFLP, where the facility size is limited and the area requirements of the department vary significantly throughout the planning horizon. Therefore, department dimensions and sizes are considered as decision variables in the CFLP. A large scale hybrid simulated annealing (LS-HSA) is proposed to solve the problem. The proposed LS-HSA has shown to be effective and versatile as it can be applied to various facility layout problems.

The EBC Research Interest Group features Penn State Berks faculty and visiting experts who conduct research on a wide variety of topics. Topics are of broad and general interest and are accessible to the non-expert.
