There's a Hero Within - October 19-21, 2012

Penn State Berks Homecoming is just three weeks away! We hope you'll join us for a fun-filled weekend of great activities and programs that will offer you the opportunity to come back to campus to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, relive memories of your college days, and create more lasting memories of your Alma Mater.
One of the highlights of the weekend is the Alumni Reunion Brunch, Saturday morning at 10:00am - 11:00 am. Come with a hearty appetite and enjoy a special morning celebrating alumni and visiting with other alumni, college faculty and staff. Brunch is free and open to all PSU alumni and their guests. RSVP is required for the brunch (see below).

PERKINS PLAZA DEDICATION CEREMONY

1:00 p.m. Perkins Plaza

Join us for the dedication ceremony of the newly constructed Perkins Plaza. The Perkins Plaza will honor the memory of Dr. Harold W. Perkins, who served as CEO of Penn State Berks from 1959-1984. Dr. Perkins was instrumental in laying the foundation for the campus. He helped the school grow from its small beginnings in the Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute buildings to a new, expanded campus location, where the college stands today.

FLOAT BUILDING PARTY

Bring the whole family and join our student organizations in designing and constructing their best parade float.  All floats will be featured in the Homecoming Parade on Saturday morning and judged in our annual float-building competition!  The float-building party will also feature music and entertainment by Crazy Bob from The Party People, Inc.

Test your strength by climbing to the top of the rock wall, energize your superpowers in the Superhero Tumbler, practice your navigational skills in the Amazing Maze, and race a friend through the Superhero Boot Camp obstacle course!  Pose for a caricature and then grab some cotton candy, a soft pretzel, and popcorn to recharge. Be on the lookout for our favorite Superhero artist and take home a one-of-a-kind balloon creation!

MINI GOLF CHALLENGE

Like to golf but don't want to drop any of your own green on the green? Bring a friend or the whole family and meet us at the Perkins Plaza for a free game of mini-golf!

HIGHLIGHTING THE GAIGE TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS INNOVATION BUILDING

11:15 a.m., Check in at the welcome tent

Take a tour with our Lion Ambassadors and explore the new Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building.  On this tour, Kim Berry, Director of Business Services, will highlight some of the building’s notable features and discuss the engineering work that earned the building the prestigious award of LEED gold level certification. LEED was established by the U.S. Green Building Council and is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.  The three-story facility includes a range of sustainability strategies including rainwater collection and a heat-recovery system, just to name a few.

This open forum provides parents and families of new and returning students the opportunity to meet with professional staff and discuss any questions or concerns, as well as talk about the current news at Penn State Berks.

A presentation by Dave Delozier, Director of Development and Alumni Relations
The Perkins Plaza will honor the memory of Dr. Harold W. Perkins and also provide a beautiful gathering place for students, faculty, staff, and community members. The Plaza will include outdoor seating, a water feature, and most importantly, a clock carillon --for many years a passion of our first campus CEO. Join Dave Delozier for this brief presentation about the significance of the Perkins Plaza for Penn State Berks.

 

THE PLANTS OF PENN STATE BERKS

Professor Dave Sanford will lead a walking tour of campus foliage. During the tour, Professor Sanford will highlight plants for your home landscaping and offer tips for gardening.

 

HOMECOMING PARADE

12:30 p.m., Perkins Student Center

Students, alumni, faculty, and staff will show off their float-building skills and Penn State pride as they make their way across campus to the Perkins Student Center!  Cheer for your favorite float to help our judges determine this year’s float-building champion!

 

WOMEN’S SOCCER VERSUS GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY

THE VON SHAKES LIVE IN CONCERT

The Von Shakes are an Indie Rock & Roll band from Ireland that have taken America by storm in the past year.  Expect a lot of furious guitar, hard pelting drums, and a ton of on-stage energy!  With their gloriously impassioned sound, great vocals and catchy lyrics, the Von Shakes are a must-see band!

CIVILITY’S NOISY NEIGHBOR  

3:00 p.m., 3 Perkins Student Center

Presented by Andrea Kolb, Assistant Director of Campus Life
This session will explore the topic of civility and how it relates to our everyday behaviors, attitudes, and relationships. In a fun and interactive simulation, participants will analyze and practice some simple behaviors that Civility demonstrates to create a friendly community.  However, when a noisy newcomer moves into the neighborhood, Civility’s behavior becomes less civil. We will take a close look at how Civility’s noisy neighbor can disrupt the community and what actions Civility can take to help maintain a positive environment.  

BEST OF BERKS TALENT COMPETITION

Come out and watch our talented student organizations compete for victory in our annual Best of Berks competition.  Student organizations will perform original talent acts and a panel of faculty and staff judges, together with the votes of the audience members, will determine this year’s most talented group!

CRAZY BOB’S SUPERHERO OLYMPICS DINNER PARTY

Enjoy dinner in our state-of-the art dining facility while testing your trivia knowledge with Crazy Bob’s Superhero-themed dinner party!  There will be many chances to try your luck at a handful of silly challenges and win cool prizes. Cash, credit, and meal plan are accepted.

Villains are descending upon the Perkins Plaza! We’re calling in all available superheroes to defend our city! Suit up and meet us at the Plaza for an exciting game of laser tag in our obstacle-filled inflatable outdoor arena.

Be a superhero in the fight against pediatric cancer by joining our Berks THON students in their annual 5K walk or run. All proceeds will go to the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey.

TEXAS ROADHOUSE FUNDRAISER, Presented by THON

Join Berks THON for a delicious lunch at Texas Roadhouse. A percentage of sales will be donated to THON to support the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey. The Four Diamonds Fund provides support to patients and families who are fighting the battle against pediatric cancer.

KICK-OFF TO NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK

11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Reading Public Museum, 500 Museum Road  Reading, PA 19611

Join us as we celebrate the kick-off to the 25th anniversary of National Chemistry Week!  This year’s theme is “Nanotechnology: The Smallest BIG Idea in Science,” and the event will feature hands-on science activities for elementary through high school students and their parents. Area chemists will supervise and explain the importance of each activity. Free admission to the first 300 guests!

GHOST STORIES WALKING TOUR WITH PARANORMAL EXPERT, CHARLIE ADAMS

3:30 p.m., Gring’s Mill Park

Sponsored by the Penn State Alumni Society
Cost is $10 per person/$5 for age 12 and under.
This annual event includes a walking tour along the canal while being entertained by Charlie Adams’ famous ghost stories. A Q&A session with complimentary refreshments will take place in the barn following the tour.
