General Course Information

Department IST

Number 413

Title Usability Engineering

Credits 3

Description The modern system development process includes concurrent

engineering of usability - features of a system that make it

approachable, learnable, as well as easy and satisfying to

use. Topics in the course include the emerging concept of

usability, requirements gathering and analysis, the use of

scenarios and claims to describe and analyze both current

human practices and envisioned practices, activity design,

information design, interaction design, documentation design,

and user testing, including techniques for formative and

summative usability evaluation.

Prerequisite IST331

Objectives Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to build

effective, flexible, and robust user interfaces. They will also

develop paradigms of programming environments used to

build user interfaces, translate system requirements into

appropriate human/computer interaction sequences and

model human/computer dialogues into transaction networks in

order to capture and to respond to changes of state in the

system. They will have the skills necessary to choose mode,

media, and device for input/output instantiation appropriate for

the user population, the application requirements, and the

processing capabilities of the system.
