Some of the different aspects of literacy include Technical Literacy, Cultural Literacy, Teleliteracy, Academic Language, Economic Literacy, and Scientific Literacy. In order to comprehend certain programs at your university one must be computer literate as well.
We could
define academic literacy as having a good core knowledge as described by
E.D Hirsch in his book "Cultural literacy: What every
American Needs to Know" He spoke of Universal literacy being what is needed,
or a well developed base of shared knowledge. In college it is assumed
you have a basic understanding of the three "Rs"
Part of the concept of academic literacy also includes the changing "Technical Literacy" aspect of academic literacy. With computers being applied to new areas daily it is imperative that as an academic student we strive to keep up with the new technologies being offered. As a student requirements of how our work is completed almost always includes a computer in some way. Weather it would include internet searches, work being e-mailed to instructors or that the work be typed a certain way, a basic knowledge of computers would be required.
As a student being able to focus your time to do the best on your education is a learned skill or an art nowadays. It is important that we find out about the services that are available at your school. We would also have to get to the library to find out was available to us and how to obtain what one would need.
As
one would start out in the beginning of our continued education we would
want to assess ourselves on a regular basis to be sure of our performance
at all times. It is important that we know who we are, and what we want,
and to be honest with our self-evaluations. Getting help with study
habits or tutoring will get us back on the right track.
For the person who gets good
grades all the time, they probably have been practicing these things from
the time they were in high school. Luckily for us, if we begin to focus
our attention on our study habits and practice it will begin to get easier
and we would be on our way to academic literacy.
All of the above items
tend to mold the perfect student. The perfect student can only be attained
from a combonation of all of the above. He or she must be well versed in
academic literacy. Of course the fact of the matter is since we can only
speculate what academic Literacy really is, we will never have that perfect
student. However, we still must try.
